Initially, I was very skeptical about Glee. Mainly, it was due to the sudden burst of interest in various networking sites I subscribe to and mostly spearheaded by the rather sappy bunch. So, I let the hype die down. Then at my friend's party we caught a marathon of the series at Star World. Now, I regularly put in an hour a week of my life for Glee.
So to the basics, [for those who haven't caught an episode yet] Glee is a TV Series about a show choir named "New Directions." The club is tagged as the underdogs of the school consisting of the pregnant cheerleader, insecure football quarterback, school overachiever and day dreamer, gay kid, Asians and the physically disabled. It basically tells of a tale where they highlight that everyone is not what they are stereotyped as in high school.
Glee most definitely gets points for the great renditions they've made of both show tunes and chart hits. They have good blending and the song selection is superb. They have songs from plays to RnB tunes.
Characters are okay. I don't find anything spectacular to comment on. Regular stereotyped high school characters. Though the two notable ones in this series would be: Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays). The OC Guidance Councilor and the Mean Cheerleader Coach are unique to this series and most definitely fun to watch..
Plot and Setting are okay too. It's set in a fictional McKinley High in Lima, Ohio. The dynamics of relationships between members of that small community plays a big part in the formation of the plot. Something that gives Glee an upper hand would be that the issues tackled are very much grounded in the real world as compared to HSM's disnified happy endings. The maturity of the series gives Glee an appeal to a much larger target market.
Anyway, the final verdict would be: It's worth the weekly hour you put in. I also would recommend getting the songs but I wouldn't go as far as getting the DVD of the series. I'll give it a good job plus a pat on the back.
Here's a Glimpse of Glee. [I particularly like this song for the fact that this show cases Tina, the Asian Girl who doesn't really get much airtime and this is one of my favorite songs from the series.]
